What is Bariatrics?

Bariatrics is the branch of medicine that deals with the causes, prevention, and treatment of obesity. Many factors influence weight, including nutrition, exercise, genetics, metabolism, lifestyle and culture. Excess weight causes us to feel sluggish and lack energy, and is associated with cardiovascular disease, stroke, hypertension, diabetes, sleep apnea, asthma, arthritis, certain types of cancer and gastroesophageal reflux (GERD). As a consequence, obesity is considered a major public health concern and is one of the leading preventable causes of death worldwide. It takes guidance on exercise, nutrition, and lifestyle changes to effectively treat obesity. Bariatrics gives us the tools we need to conquer obesity and maintain our ideal body weight.

Dr. Bruner’s medical approach to weight management increases her patients’ chances for success. As a board certified bariatric physician, Dr Bruner treats all of the causes of obesity instead of taking the simplistic approach of placing the blame on the patient. She has the, experience, tools and techniques to design individual programs for specific patient needs. In addition to obtaining a detailed medical history, Dr. Bruner incorporates the results of a comprehensive panel of blood tests, a current EKG and a bioelectrical impedance analysis (to determine body composition and % body fat) into creating a personalized program for each of her patients.

How is it Done?

Dr. Bruner begins your program by assessing your weight gain on an individual level. She will determine whether your weight condition has been caused by a lack of physical activity, eating or over-eating habits, genetics, medical or health reasons, psychiatric illness, or a combination of causes. Dr. Bruner will give you the tools to overcome a sedentary lifestyle, and will treat all of the underlying medical conditions which cause obesity.

I Am Ready!

First, Dr. Bruner will assess your recent medical history and lab tests; if your records or results are not current (within 6 months) you may need new tests.

After reviewing your history and test results, Dr. Bruner will perform a physical examination, discuss your needs and concerns, and offer the best treatment options for you. Once your optimal course of treatment has been determined you will be provided with a personal food diary to utilize with your personalized diet plan, as well as a specific exercise regimen for you to follow at home. A discreet “before” photo for your private medical file will be taken to help document your progress. On your subsequent visits, you will meet with Dr. Bruner or one of the staff RN’s or medical assistants. We will measure your weight, blood pressure and heart rate, as well as gather information regarding your dietary intake, hydration, exercise and current medications. Dr. Bruner will continue to assess your progress, answer any questions you may have, and adjust your personalized program as needed. Keep in mind, follow-up visits are essential to helping you manage your weight.
